If you’re up for a fun and delicious baking challenge, then follow this recipe to make your very own Boston Cream donuts.

Ingredients:
– 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
– ¾ cup whole milk, warmed
– 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
– ½ cup granulated sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
– 2 large eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the filling:
– 1 ½ cups whole milk
– 6 large egg yolks
– ⅔ cup granulated sugar
– ¼ cup cornstarch
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the chocolate glaze:
– 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
– ½ cup heavy cream
– 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Instructions:
1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in the warmed milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, and salt. Add the softened butter and mix until crumbly. Add the yeast mixture, eggs, and vanilla extract, and mix until a dough forms.

3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

4. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about ½ inch thickness. Using a round cutter, cut out donut shapes and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

5. While the donuts are rising, preheat the oil in a deep fryer or dutch oven to 375°F (190°C).

6. Once the oil is heated, carefully fry the donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Remove the donuts with a slotted spoon and place them on a paper towel to drain.

7. To make the filling, heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until it begins to simmer. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg yolks, sugar, and cornstarch. Slowly pour the hot milk into the egg mixture, whisking continuously. Return the mixture to the saucepan and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it thickens. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Let the filling cool.

8. Once the donuts are completely cooled, use a piping bag fitted with a round tip to fill each donut with the prepared cream filling.

9. To make the chocolate glaze, heat the heavy cream in a small saucepan until it begins to simmer. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate chips and let it sit for a minute before stirring until smooth. Stir in the butter until melted.

10. Dip the top of each donut into the chocolate glaze and let it set before serving.

Congratulations, you’ve just made your very own Boston Cream donuts from scratch! These delicious treats are best enjoyed fresh, but you can store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a day or two. Serve them up for breakfast, brunch, or as a sweet treat anytime. Enjoy!
