If you’re an avid pizza lover and enjoy making your own homemade pizzas, then canning your own pizza sauce is a game changer. Not only does it allow you to have a delicious and convenient sauce on hand whenever the craving strikes, but it also gives you the freedom to customize the flavor to your liking.

Making your own pizza sauce may seem daunting at first, but with the right recipe and some basic canning equipment, it’s actually quite simple. Plus, the end result is well worth the effort – a flavorful, preservative-free sauce that can be used on pizzas, pasta, and more.

Here’s a simple DIY recipe for canning your own pizza sauce:

Ingredients:
– 25 lbs ripe tomatoes
– 2 large onions, finely chopped
– 6 cloves garlic, minced
– 1/2 cup olive oil
– 4 tsp salt
– 2 tsp black pepper
– 2 tsp sugar
– 2 tsp dried oregano
– 2 tsp dried basil
– 1 tsp dried thyme
– 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
– 1/4 cup red wine vinegar

Instructions:
1. Begin by washing and blanching the tomatoes to remove the skins. Once they are cooled, remove the skins and chop the tomatoes into small pieces.

2. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat and sauté the onions and garlic until they are soft and fragrant.

3. Add the chopped tomatoes to the pot and bring the mixture to a simmer. Cook for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes have broken down and the mixture has thickened.

4. Add the salt, pepper, sugar, oregano, basil, thyme, and red pepper flakes to the pot and stir to combine. Allow the mixture to simmer for an additional 10 minutes.

5. Once the sauce has reached the desired consistency, stir in the red wine vinegar and taste for seasoning. Adjust as needed.

6. While the sauce is still hot, carefully transfer it to clean, sterilized canning jars, leaving about 1/2 inch of headspace at the top. Wipe the rims of the jars with a clean, damp cloth and seal them with the lids and bands.

7. Process the jars in a boiling water canner for 35 minutes (adjust for altitude as needed). Once processed, remove the jars from the canner and allow them to cool completely before storing in a cool, dark place.

With this recipe, you can enjoy the satisfaction of making your own pizza sauce from scratch and the convenience of having it ready to use whenever you need it. Plus, by canning the sauce, you can enjoy it long after tomato season has come and gone.

So, if you’re ready to take your homemade pizzas to the next level, consider making and canning your own pizza sauce. Once you try it, you may never go back to store-bought options again.
